Are you up for one more stop today?”

Adam switched his bags from one hand to the other, surprised how much a one-pound lobster could add to his load on the way back to the inn. “Sure. What’d you have in mind?”

“Justin—”

“From the dairy.”

“Right. Justin Kane, who owns Kane Dairy.”

He frowned at the too-easy way Justin’s name rolled off her tongue.

This was new information. He’d pictured Justin as a kid working a summer job shoveling out cow stalls. He’d imagined the kid wasn’t much older than the ones in Caden’s cooking class.

But now he didn’t know how to picture the other man. He could be a young guy working a start-up, maybe someone Caden knew from grade school. Or he could be a grandfather type who’d worked the farm for a hundred years.

He much preferred the latter option.

“He said he has a block of cheese that I ordered a couple days ago. I’d like to try it on the asparagus side dish tomorrow.” She looked up at him, her eyes as blue as the cloudless sky and twice as pretty. She blinked into the sun, whose light turned her hair a rich honey color and left a halo on the crown of her head. The little dimple in her left cheek made a quick appearance as her lips paused in a smile. “Mind if we stop to pick it up?”

In that moment he couldn’t have denied her the moon had she asked for it.

He choked on nothing but the air he was breathing.

“Are you okay?”

“Sure. No.” He let her thump his back several times as he wheezed out the words. Her hand was smaller than his but firm and strong, and when she wrapped her other hand around his arm, he leaned into her contact. “I’m good.”

“You sure?”

“Just a . . . nothing. I’m fine.”

He regretted saying that as soon as she let go. He could still feel the warmth of her touch where her hand had been.

“Good. The dairy is right down the road.”

In true North Rustico fashion, they passed a small field with four brown cows loudly lamenting the warm weather. They went one more street down and turned a corner. A large white barn loomed before them, a two-story white farmhouse sat on the next lot over, and a giant white and blue wooden sign between the buildings said “Kane Dairy, Est. 1964.”

If the sign was to be believed, then Justin could be at least seventy years old.

That worked for Adam.

That worked really well.

Caden led the way into a small side structure built right into the barn, and Adam was surprised that it didn’t smell more like cows. But the little room had good insulation, and apparently its own air supply. The scents of fresh-baked bread and strong cheese made his mouth water.

“Morning, Carol.”

The kind-eyed octogenarian sitting behind a display of cheese rounds looked up from the mass-market paperback in her hands. “Caden, dear. Justin said you’d probably stop by today. Your cheese is ready. I’ll box it up.
